Pakistan’s first all-girl team from National University of Science and Technology (NUST) have broken the gender stereotypes by developing a Formula Racecar. And aims to participate in the upcoming International Formula Student Competition happening in Silverstone, England from 13th of July to 15th.
The students designed the prototype car first and then built it from scratch using the local parts available in the market including car engine. ” It was a challenging job but they achieved the goal in just 5 months,” says the team member. Some of their parts were made and weld by themselves in the University workshop by using lathes machine. They shared their experience of visiting the local auto part shops in Rawalpindi as it was shocking and unusual for them. “They were not used to dealing with female customers. Some even advised us to stay at home as this job was only meant for boys,” says the team member.
The hardest challenge to get this job done was to stick with it day and night and being a girl it’s not a cinch deal for them to stay out late night in University’s garage and workshop. But they were determined to demonstrate their remarkable skills on the international platform.
Formula Student (FS) is the world’s largest & most proverbial student engineering design competition which is organized and supported by high profile engineers and global industries. Each year, hundreds of participants from around the globe take part in it with their prototype single-seat racing car. The car performance will be evaluated on the basis of the car’s fuel economy, endurance, acceleration, design dynamics, skid pad etc. The NUST team’s car is rated at 90 Horsepower and drifts from 0-100km/h in 4 seconds. The car costs them around half a million.
Team Auj is consist of girls from the different discipline of engineering and business management but its surprising that they have no mechanical engineer as they have proved that you are not confined to your degrees if you really want to do something, It’s all about your passion and ambition. Their marketing department has managed well to get some big companies as their sponsors through their innovative project. The team is not only determined about holding a position among the top team in the competition but the initiative is to increase the women empowerment, However, the racecar will also be driven by a female driver on the race track. Other Pakistani women need to be inspired and take part in their fields as there is no such thing ever existed in this world which can be done by women. The team will be competing against 30+ teams around the world. Also, they shared their plans for making their car’s design and performance better to achieve perfection in upcoming years. The team is departing on 9th of July for the competition.
